Matthew Waugh

Chapter Chair

As a Lansing Michigan native, Matthew grew up with The Ledges of Grand Ledge - the epicenter of Mid- Michigan climbing right near his doorstep. He fell in love with climbing during the Camping, Climbing & Caving portion of Boy Scouts. He joined the Army in 2001 and served as a Chemical, Biological, Radiological, Nuclear and Explosives Warfare Specialist for ten years. He did two tours in Iraq in 2003 and 2005 and one tour in Afghanistan in 2007. It was during training at the US Army Mountain Warfare School where his love for climbing was resurrected.

Matthew is currently simultaneously working on reaching the 50 High Points of each state and an attempt at the Seven Summits/Explorers Grand Slam (Last Degree). His goal in each endeavor is to raise funds for Post Traumatic Stress Disorder research to study how utilizing outdoor recreation could serve as a means to holistically mitigate the affects of PTSD for fellow Veterans. He enjoys trad & alpine climbing, snowboarding & skiing, skydiving, fly fishing, surfing, collecting vinyl records and travel. He is retiring from government service in 2021 and hopes that his endeavor with the AAC along with his own goals and ambitions lead to a fulfilling second chapter of life.
